"Shirt Off" David Beckham
This advertisement is called "Shirt Off" staring David Beckham, a famous British soccer player. The ad was released on May of 2012 and focused on Burger King's smoothies.
The little picture of this advertisement is that Burger King was selling smoothies made with real fruit. The bigger picture is that Burger King is now trying to appeal to healthier audiences in order to increase their sales. It explains why they use a famous athlete in their commercial.
One of the deadly sins present in this video is lust. All of the ladies in the video lusted after David and wanted him to take his shirt off. Not only that but David Beckham was voted People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2015, so a lot of people find him attractive. Another deadly sin in this video is envy. The men in this video wanted David to keep his shirt on because they didn't want their girlfriends, wives, etc. looking at a shirtless Beckham.
The intended audience for this ad is people who like smoothies and want to/are living a healthy lifestyle. The economic background of the audience could probably be middle and upper class families that can afford to spend a little extra to buy smoothies. The cultural knowledge the intended audience has is that David Beckham is a famous. Even if some members of the audience didn't watch soccer, they would know who he was or they would've heard his name somewhere. Plus, seeing him in a commercial about smoothies makes sense because he's an athlete and athletes are known to live healthy lifestyles.
The director used testimonial propaganda in this advertisement by using David Beckham. A celebrity at a well-known restaurant; that draws people in. If a celebrity uses a product, they're most likely going to use it too. They also put David in a white shirt so the audience can clearly see the stain on his shirt. The little stain on his shirt adds to the comedic aspect of this ad; he didn't really need to take his shirt off for such a small stain, the women there just wanted him to. The sleeves on his shirt are rolled up in order to show off his tattoos and his forearms because women nowadays are attracted to those things.

Really interesting blog!!! I really liked reading your analysis on the meaning of using testimonial. They could of got anyone off of the street and they some how find a way to get a great soccer player to play as there actor. Overall I thought your blog was detailed and contained a lot of well argued points with a good paragraph on the audience. This was probably one of the most important times to talk about audience because like someone who could sad that this was fake and that it it not happen but because it is a fame person it is harder to nor remembered
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog. Despite a few grammatical errors the blog was well organized and analyzed the advertisement very well. I thought you did a good job incorporating multiple deadly sins and analyzing them both throughout. You added in facts that brought attention to your argument which attracted the reader. You were able to develop your post very well, allowing for the key points and supporting details to match up well. I would've included a conclusion paragraph to summarize your key points and to remind the reader of the purpose and overall goal of the post.
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts here- try to go through "the big 5" in your analysis and to include specific devices, techniques, or features (like you did with testimonial propaganda).
